There is nothing quite like the taste of washed coffee from Ethiopia. That is why we could not resist bringing this coffee to you. Noëlle and Dagmar have both visited Danche and are big fans of the coffee produced there. Danche is also known as the washing station with the large tree at the entrance. What makes a big impact on the quality of the coffee here is that the washing station is relatively horizontal. This means that during processing, the coffee does not have to be carried up and down hills. That may not sound significant, but it makes the work much easier. This leaves more energy to sort the coffee properly and to move it to another place at the right time, for example from the shade to the sun.

Danche is located in Yirgacheffe. The washing station is located in the area where we believe both humanity and coffee originated. Coincidence? If you ask the Ethiopians, they are convinced that this cannot be a coincidence. Because coffee has been grown here for years, it has become a big part of the culture and identity.

You may have heard of the goat herder Kaldi, who, together with his goats, is said to have discovered coffee and its stimulating properties. If you visit this region today, you will still see goats on every street corner. And here, in addition to goats, you will also find coffee houses on many street corners where you can get a cup of coffee.

You will then immediately walk into a “coffee ceremony”. Coffee ceremonies come in many different shapes and sizes. The simplest version, which you may encounter on the street corner, is where coffee is brewed in a tall coffee pot, a Jabena, and grass is scattered on the ground like confetti. For very special occasions, incense is also lit, but this does not happen often because incense, such as frankincense, is very expensive. Snacks such as popcorn may also be served. The nice thing about popcorn is that, like coffee, it “pops” and expands in volume. The coffee cups are filled to the brim, so you have to pick them up carefully when you drink. In addition to sugar, the coffee can also be spiced with a local herb called “Tena Adam”. This herb looks like a kind of fern and removes the bitterness from the coffee and tastes a bit like spring flowers. In some coffees, this flavour can also be present naturally. We hope that this coffee will take you on a little journey to Ethiopia. Dreaming of a coffee ceremony.
