Coffee Department
Mt. KENYA
Mt. KENYA is located in Meru County in Eastern Kenya. Meru was the first area where Kenyans could grow coffee and the Kenyans who started growing coffee here in the early 1930s were the inspiration for more than 600,000 smallholder farmers who grow coffee in Kenya today. The high altitude and cool climate make Meru an important place for coffee cultivation. The coffee grown in Mwithu is processed in the characteristic Kenyan coffee processing process. After harvest, the coffee cherry is processed and then left to undergo a natural fermentation process. After fermentation, the beans are washed and sorted by size before being dried on raised beds. In Kenya, coffee beans are classified by their size and the sieve size of AB grade beans is 15-18, meaning each bean is between 6-7mm.
